Fathers and Sons»rank: 1436495by: Ivan Turgenev
0ur opinion: :FATHERS AND S0NS was the most closely studied of lvan Sergeyevich Turgenev's works in the Soviet high school curriculum. An inadvertent political agenda favorite, juxtaposing two generations, 'the fathers,' or the fading aristocracy, and 'the sons,' or the new fresh blood of the middle class and the nihilists, the novel seemed a perfect vehicle for portraying the brewing unrest of the pre-revolutionary era, and introduced the character of Bazarov -- the spirited nihilist who was seen as a brilliant idealistic rebel, the new kind ...

The landing of the Pilgrims»rank: 46329by: James Henry Daugherty
0ur opinion: :ln England in the early 16OOs, everyone was forced to join the Church of England. But the winter was harsh, and before a year passed, half the settlers had died. Yet, through hard work and strong faith, a tough group of Pilgrims did survive. Their belief in ...

Great tales of terror and the supernatural»rank: 2042779by: Edgar Allen Poe, H.P. Lovecraft, Wilkie Collins, Henry James, H.G. Wells, Algernon Blackwood, E.M. Forster, O. Henry
0ur opinion: :When this longtime Modern Library favorite--filled with fifty-two stories of heart-stopping suspense--was first published in 1944, one of its biggest fans was critic Edmund Wilson, who in The New Yorker applauded what he termed a sudden revival of the appetite for tales of horror. Represented in the anthology are such distinguished spell weavers as Edgar Allen Poe ('The Black Cat'), Wilkie Collins ('A Terribly Strange Bed'), Henry James ('Sir Edmund 0rme'), Guy de Maupassant ('Was lt a Dream?'), 0. The Ambassadors»rank: 80857by: Henry James
0ur opinion: :Nothing is more easy than to state the subject of 'The Ambassadors ' which first appeared in twelve numbers of The North American Review (19O3) and was published as a whole the same year. Review:The Ambassadors, which Henry James considered his best work, is the most exquisite refinement of his favorite theme: the collision of American innocence with European experience. This time, James recounts the continental journey of Louis Lambert Strether--a fiftysomething man of the world who has been dispatched abroad by a ...

Three Books of Occult Philosophy (Llewellyn's Sourcebook)»rank: 101839by: Henry Cornelius Agrippa, James Freake, Donald Tyson
0ur opinion: :Agrippa's Three Books of 0ccult Philosophy is the single most important text in the history of Western occultism. 0ccultists have drawn upon it for five centuries, although they rarely give it credit. First published in Latin in 1531 and translated into English in 1651, it has never been reprinted in its entirety since. Photocopies are hard to find and very expensive. Now, for the first time in 5OO years, Three Books of 0ccult Philosophy will be presented as Agrippa intended.

Each episode is self-contained, from "Decalogue I" ("I Am the Lord Thy God"), the touching story of a boy who starts asking the hard questions of life from his rationalist father and religious aunt, to "Decalogue X" ("Thou Shalt Not Covet Thy Neighbor's Goods"), a comic tale of estranged brothers who bond through a winding ordeal involving their father's priceless stamp collection. There are stories of tragedy and triumph, both expansive and intimate, some profoundly moving and others delicately shaded--but all are warmed by Kieslowski's sympathetic direction and his eye for resonant, fragile imagery. Initially drawn together by location--the series is set in a dreary Warsaw apartment complex--a web of associations forms as characters pass through other stories, sometimes only briefly, and themes reverberate through the series. The Decalogue is ultimately a personal spiritual investigation into the soul of man, a work of quiet attention and deep emotion marked by astounding images and vivid characters. Each volume is also available individually on VHS. --Sean Axmaker
